Golf Tips For The Lob Shot

The Lob shot always impresses the crowds, everyone wants to see that expertise around the greens. They love to see the players really open up the clubface and send the golf ball straight up in the air and land it softly right next to the pin. Probably, one of the most noted players for the lob shot is Phil Mickelson and he unquestionably has a great short game. But to me, Seve Ballesteros is the undisputed master of the lob shot.

I must have tried 50 different techniques in an effort to find something that worked for me, but finally everything clicked into place after watching Seve Ballesteros practice these shots. What I noticed was how flexed he kept his knees and how low to the ground he positioned his body at address to ensure that the clubhead approached the ball at a shallow angle-and that really is the key to playing the lob shot successfully.

If your using a sand wedge, open up your stance so that your feet, hips, and shoulders are all aiming slightly to the left of the target, to the right if your a lefty, so when you make a normal golf swing along the line of your feet, you cut across the ball slightly at impact. Also, open up the face of the club before you grip it to increase the loft further and choke down an inch or so on the grip for extra control.

As you take the club away low to the ground, allowing your wrists to hinge naturally, your next thought is to accelerate smoothly through impact, making sure that the clubhead remains low to the ground in the follow-through. Don't try to scoop the ball into the air with your hands, simply rely on the adjustments you've made to your address position to create the shallow angle of attack into the ball. Now, you can play this shot with a sand wedge, but it's far easier to use a 60-degree wedge or a lob wedge. The extra loft on the club means you can play the shot with the face square to the target and eliminates the need for any adjustments to your address position to get the ball airborne. This shot takes a lot of practice, be sure to put in enough practice so that your confident when it comes time to make the shot. If your not confident about ANY shot then, the end result probably won't be good.
